Our latest addition to the writing team, Bethan, thrives in a creative, sociable environment and spends her days crafting powerful copy. She’s been speaking to us about how she got here…
Hi Bethan. So, tell us more about you…
Hello! I’m Bethan, the newest member of the Seeker writing team. I arrived at the Seeker front door at the start of August, aiming to seek my fortune in the digital media industry doing something I love: writing.
How exciting. Where did it all begin?
I first discovered how much I enjoyed words when I was very small. My head was always buried in a book — anything I could get my hands on — and I remember frequently getting told off at 3 in the morning for reading Harry Potter under my duvet using a torch. I also used to write my own stories, a weird mix of princess-led magical mystical stories and a 9 year-old’s take on crime fiction. As a child, I basically based myself on Matilda (though with a much nicer family. And no superpowers, bit gutted about that).
And what have you been up to more recently?
As I got older, my passion for all things literature continued and I went off to Cardiff University to study English Literature. I had a whale of a time there — Cardiff is a fantastic city to be a student in and I found my degree fascinating. Literature is so varied, and I loved studying everything from contemporary feminist works to Gothic fiction, to Welsh poetry to Jazz Age literature to Shakespeare. I am also now considering setting up my own library with ridiculous amount of books I accumulated during those three years.
In 2013 I graduated from Cardiff University, said goodbye to my jager-bomb-fuelled Tuesdays and 24-hour library stints, and set off into the big wide world…
Fantastic. What have you been doing since then?
Ooh, all sorts! After I graduated, I decided to do some adventuring — dividing my time between travelling, ski seasons in the French Alps, and summers on the Cornish coast (with a little bit of bouncing between Bristol and Cardiff too). After I went travelling around South America and failed to find myself at the top of Machu Picchu, I decided to come home to Bristol and settle down a little bit.
I love Bristol, so it just felt like the start of a new adventure. It’s such a vibrant, creative city, and there’s so much going on all the time. My partner and I are both massive foodies too, and the food scene here in Bristol is very exciting.
Sounds like fun. What happened next?
Well I got taken in by OVO — a young and friendly energy company based in Bristol. They took me on as a temp initially, but eventually my dazzling wit and charming smile won them over and they offered me a permanent role. I stayed with the company for two and a half years — I’m a sociable person, and I loved the fun, buzzing atmosphere of the office, the free beers and my lovely team.
Err okay, that all sounds great, but how did you end up at Seeker?
WELL, while I was at my last job, I started doing some freelance copywriting, and found Seeker through a friend.
I immediately fell in love with writing again — it was something different and challenging, creative and exciting. I really enjoyed the variety too, and how each time I wrote about something new, I’d learn something new. I felt inspired, and decided that this was what I wanted to do. Luckily, Seeker liked my work as much as I liked them and, well, the rest is history!
Cool. So how are you finding it so far?
L-O-V-I-N-G I-T. I’ve been at Seeker for a few weeks now, and I have to say, it’s been great so far. I’m learning so much each day, my writing is improving all the time, and I’m really enjoying discovering more about the digital marketing industry. The team we have here is really strong too — they’re a talented bunch!
Can you tell us a bit about the stuff you’ve been working on?
One of the great things about being part of an agency is that it’s all so varied. I’ve been writing on a huge range of topics, from goldfish to ecommerce. I’ve also been editing and optimising older pieces as well as writing my own stuff, which is pretty fun.
One of my favourite projects has been a new Nordic website that we’re setting up — I’ve written a lot of the content for it, and have also been working with one of our developers to put the site together. Very exciting.
What do you think you’re bringing to the table at Seeker?
In a nutshell: boundless enthusiasm and some strong content.
What excites you the most about joining Seeker?
I think the potential: Seeker is still such a young company, but already very successful and it’s constantly growing and evolving, so I’m incredibly excited to see where it goes. We’ve just moved to HERE too, and it’s brilliant to be in a creative hub with established brands and possible networking opportunities.
The ethos at Seeker is great as well — I’m thrilled to be part of the team, and I find learning about content marketing really interesting. I’m looking forward to getting involved with client meetings, and building up my SEO and outreach knowledge.
And what do you like doing in your spare time?
I love travelling and food. And books, pubs, music, mountains, camping and swimming… Going to different countries and exploring their culture, landscapes and foodie scenes is one of my favourite things to do.
I’m part Maltese and my partner has Swedish relatives, so we go to both countries a lot and hang out with our families there. Both have got very distinct cultures and food traditions; I love sitting on a hot Maltese beach with a cold can of cisk (Maltese lager), eating watermelon or a delicious pastizzi (like a cornish pasty with flaky pastry and a ricotta filling). I’m equally happy downing schnapps at a Swedish crayfish party before jumping into the bracing North sea. Brrr.
