What was the talk about?
A man in an orange suit, of course. But beyond the renowned Christoph C. Cemper’s sartorial fizz was a talk to whet the appetite of any link-builder. Why? Because Christoph explained that your own website can be the most valuable tool for increasing your rankings.
SEOs know the value of getting good links from external sources and it’s the reason so much of our time is spent securing them. But once you’ve got them, do you then do enough to get the most from them? Using internal links helps to strengthen your external links, but most websites Christoph has reviewed use banal internal links – like “T&C,” or “see price and plans.”
To get the max from your internal links you should change branded phrases to money phrases (generic terms people actually search for). You must also make your internal link anchor text less time sensitive/tied. Adopting this strategy is not only a proven way of improving your rankings, it’s also one of the most time-efficient SEO tactics.

“Do you think we are aggressive enough with our internal linking?”
Potential impact on the industry
Christoph C. Cemper didn’t post an orange revolution during his talk – much as his uniform betrayed the opposite. But his views on internal linking are based on sound logic from and demonstrated in consistent results. We’re not going out on a limb here by suggesting that (with time such a valuable currency) more industry experts with be diverting their link budget towards an internal strategy.
Key takeaways
- Starting using more internal links
- Replace branded phrases for money ones
- Make your anchors less time-sensitive
